JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE SELECTION
JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE SELECTION
France
Famously known as the Pope of Hermitage, the Chave family (currently helmed by Gérard and son Jean-Louis) represents 16 generations of unbroken lineage committed to the evocation of some of the finest Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne on the planet since 1491 in Northern Rhône. Jean Louis joined his father in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at University of Connecticut and a degree in oenology at Davis. After forfeiting his childhood dream of becoming a Wall Street broker, the prodigal son came home from America to accept his place among winemaking royalty. It was at that time that he completely replanted vineyards on the family’s original estate in Saint Joseph, which had been abandoned in the early 1900’s when phylloxera hit the region. His relatives subsequently purchased land on the anointed Hermitage hill. J.L. Chave S lection is the exclusive négociant label of Jean-Louis Chave, the doyen of Hermitage wine, and offers the perfect solution for those who adore the great wines from this appellation but not the price tag of Chave’s main label.

The vineyards for Silène are hillside vineyards located in Larnage and Gervans. It is rare for Crozes to come from hillside granitic soil as most Crozes is situated on the alluvial valley floor. The granite soil produces a wine with more backbone and structure. The idea behind this Crozes is to balance the fruit of Syrah without compromising the tightness given by the granite.

The grapes come from 3 distinctive parts of the Hermitage hill. Diognières is at the base of the hill on alluvial soil brought by the river ages ago. It is a sandy clay soil with many small pebbles. It gives spice to the wine. The next parcel is Péleat. It sits above Diognières and is composed of more sand and limestone in the clay. It gives finesse to the wine. And finally, Greffieux sits at the base of Le Meal on the hill. Its soil consists of rolled river stones brought by the glaciers. It gives the flesh in the wine.
